THE CAT

বেশিরভাগ লোকেই ভাবে যে বিড়াল হচ্ছে এক নির্বোধ প্রাণী, যারা আরাম পছন্দ করে এবং ইঁদুর ও দুধ ছাড়া অন্য কোনো বিষয়েই তাদের মাথাব্যথা নেই। কিন্তু সত্যি বলতে কী বেশিরভাগ মানুষের তুলনায় একটি বিড়ালের ব্যক্তিত্ব অনেক বেশি এবং জীবন থেকে সে অনেক বেশি তৃপ্তিও পেয়ে থাকে।
পুরুষ বা স্ত্রী বিড়াল হচ্ছে, একটি মল্ল, দড়াবাজিকর এবং এক প্রকৃত যোদ্ধা। সারা দিনমানটা একটা বিড়াল বাড়ির মধ্যে আলস্যে দিন কাটায়, সব কিছুই অত্যন্ত সহজভাবে গ্রহণ করে এবং তার প্রতি বাড়ির লোকেদের মনোযোগের কারণে ওদের তাকে বিরক্ত করতে দিতেও আপত্তি করে না। সময় কাটাবার জন্য কখনও কখনও সে দু-এক ঘণ্টা ইঁদুরের গর্তের দিকে তাকিয়ে বসেও থাকে—একঘেয়ে ক্লান্তিকর অবস্থার কবল থেকে মুক্তি পাবার উদ্দেশ্যেও সে এটা করে। সুতরাং মানুষজন ধরে নেয় যে এই জাতীয় কাজই একটি বিড়ালের জীবনে সব। কিন্তু সন্ধ্যার অন্ধকার নেমে এলে তখনই তোমরা দেখতে পেতে পারো বিড়ালটির আসল রুপ।
বঙ্গানুবাদ :
পরিবারের সকলে যখন চা খেতে বসে, তখন বিড়ালটি দেখা দেয় নিজের ভাগটা বুঝে নেবার জন্য। সে বেশ জোরেই গড়গড় শব্দ করতে থাকে এবং পরিবারের সদস্যদের পায়ে তার গা ঘষতে থাকে। টেবিলে যদি কোনো অতিথি থাকে, তাহলে বিড়ালটি তার সঙ্গে বিশেষ ভদ্র ব্যবহার করে, কারণ ভালোটা মন্দটা তার পাতেই তো বেশি করে পড়বে। কিছু কিছু সময় খাবার দেবার বদলে অতিথি ঝুঁকে পড়ে 'আহারে পুষি। আহারে পুষি।' বলে ওকে আদর করতে থাকলে বিড়ালটা অল্প সময়ের মধ্যেই বিরক্ত হয়ে ওঠে। সে তার থাবার নখ দিয়ে শান্ত অথচ শক্তভাবেই অতিথিটির পা আঁচড়ে দেয়। 'ওরে বাবাঃ।” অতিথি বলে ওঠে, 'বেড়ালটা আমার পায়ে আঁচড়ে দিলে কী জোরে। মজা পেয়ে বাড়ির লোকজন ফুট কাটে, ও কি মিষ্টি তাই না? কেমন বুদ্ধিমান ও দেখেছ? ও চাইছে যে তুমি ওকে কিছু খেতে দাও। অতিথিটির মন যেটা করতে চাইবে এবার সেটা করতে সে কিন্তু সাহস পাবে না—অর্থাৎ এক লাথিতে বেড়ালটাকে জানলার বাইরে দূর করে দেওয়া। সুতরাং প্রচন্ড রাগে এবং যন্ত্রণায় তার চোখে জল এলেও তাকে দেখাতেই হবে যে কী মজাটাই না সে পেয়েছে এবং নিজের প্লেট থেকে একটু মাছ নিয়ে নীচু হয়ে ওটাকে দিতেও হবে। বেড়ালটা আলতো করে মাছের টুকরোটাকে নিয়ে এমন দৃষ্টিতে অতিথিটির দিকে তাকাবে যে সেই দৃষ্টি যেন বলবে, 'দোস্ত, পরের বার বুঝাতে তোমার নিশ্চয়ই এত দেরি হবে না।' গলায় ঘরঘর আওয়াজ করতে করতে অতিথিটির বুটজুতোর থেকে নিরাপদ দূরত্বে সে সরে যাবে তার খাবারটা খাওয়ার আগে।
পরিবারটির চা খাওয়া শেষ হলে তারা যখন সকলে আগুনের চারপাশে গোল হয়ে বসবে, তখন বিড়ালটা নিতান্ত অলস ভঙ্গিমায় ঘর থেকে বেরিয়ে যাবে। এই সময় থেকেই তার আসল জীবন শুরু। নিরুদ্বিগ্ন ভঙ্গিমায় সে নিজের পিছনের উঠানটা পার হলো, লাফ দিয়ে বেড়ার ওপর উঠে, উলটোদিকে আলতো করে নামবে। তারপর ধীরভাবে চলে ও লাফ দিয়ে একটা চালার ওপর উঠবে। তার চলন হয়ে উঠবে চিতাবাঘের মতো সুন্দর। সে তীক্ষ্ণ দৃষ্টিতে এদিক-ওদিক দেখে নিয়ে নিঃশব্দে চলতে থাকবে, কারণ এর যে শত্রুর সংখ্যা প্রচুর-যেমন কুকুরগুলো এবং পাথরের টুকরো হাতে বাচ্চা ছেলেদের দল।

চালার ওপরে উঠে, বিড়ালটা ওর পিঠটাকে ধনুকের মতো বাঁকাবে এবং দু-একবার তার থাবার নখগুলো দিয়ে পুরোনো ছাদের নরম হয়ে যাওয়া বাকলের মধ্যে আঁচড়াবে। নিজের দেহটাকে ও বেশ কয়েকবার প্রসারিত করবে এবার এটাই দেখে নিতে যে দেহের সব মাংসপেশীগুলো ঠিকঠাক কাজ করার মতো অবস্থায় আছে কিনা। তারপর নিজের থাবাগুলোর কাছে মাথা ঝুঁকিয়ে ও ডাক দেবে ওর নিকটজনদের অল্পক্ষণের মধ্যেই ওরা সব এসে পৌঁছাবে, ধীর ভঙ্গিমায় সুন্দর ছায়াদের মতো। এখন আর ওরা বংশ বদ বা বিনীত প্রাণীকুল নয় যারা ঘণ্টাখানেক আগেও মাছ আর দুধের জন্য ম্যাও ম্যাও করছিল। এখন ওরা সবাই ভয়ংকর যোদ্ধা।
এবার ভেবে দ্যাখো ও কতখানি বেশি ওর জীবন থেকে পায় যা তোমরা তোমাদের জীবন থেকে পেয়ে থাকো। এবং ওরা খেলাধুলোও তো করে! একটু বড়ো হলেই ওরা শহরতলীর কারখানায় খেলতে চলে যায়। এইসব কারখানাগুলো যেগুলো আমাদের কাছে নিরানন্দময়, সেগুলোই ওদের কাছে শিকার ক্ষেত্র, যেখানে তারা এমন এমন সব দুঃসাহসিক কর্মে প্রবৃত্ত হয় যা কিং আর্থারের নাইটরা পর্যন্ত সেই স্বাদ উপভোগ করতে পারেনি।
ভর্ৎসনার সুরে বিড়ালদের বিপক্ষে এ কথাটা সব সময়েই বলা হয়ে থাকে যে বাড়িতে বসবাসকারী লোকেদের চেয়ে তারাই তাদের বাড়িটাকে বেশি পছন্দ করে। স্বভাবতই, বিড়াল নিজের দেশ ছেড়ে চলে যেতে পছন্দ করে না; সেই জায়গা যেখানে থাকে তার সব বন্ধুবান্ধব, এবং যেখানকার সবকিছুই তার নখদর্পণে। নতুন জায়গায় নির্বাসিত হলে, তাকে নতুন একটা ভূগোলের সঙ্গে আবার পরিচিত হতে হয়। সুতরাং, যখন একটি পরিবার দেশ ছেড়ে অন্যায় চলে যায়, তখন বিড়ালটি, অনুমতি পেলে, পুরোনো বাড়িতেই থেকে যাবে এবং বাড়ির নতুন বাসিন্দাদের সঙ্গে নিজেকে সংবদ্ধ করবে। সে তাদের ওকে ওই বাড়িতেই বাস করার সুযোগটুকু দিতে চাইবে, যখন সে তার নিজের জীবন নিজের মতো করেই উপভোগ করবে।

Donation of books for a local library
It is notified that our club, Chaitali Sangha has decided to open a library in our locality next month. The library will be built near the Kali temple, away from the hustle-bustle of the market area. But to start a library we at first need a huge number of books. We have already planned to buy various kinds of books with the funds that we have. Apart from that, I earnestly request all the members of the club to donate books for the library. Those members who are students can donate the books of their lower classes and those who are elderly and working, may request their children and their colleagues to donate books. The students may also request their families and friends to provide us with as many books as possible. Your much-needed cooperaion is required to make this project a success.
